Todd Talk: Failing Math, Failing Schools — and Big Government’s Blind Spot

A 60-second conservative commentary with humor and heart.

Illustration of a teacher at a chalkboard filled with incorrect math problems, representing the failures of public education and lack of basic math skills among students.

My friends, if you don’t think our public education system is failing, buckle up. UC San Diego reports that nearly half of incoming students can’t do basic addition or subtraction — meaning only 54% can truly say they’re smarter than a fifth grader. And yet the same big-government crowd that fights school choice and mocks homeschooling demands more and more from the taxpayer for these absolutely abysmal results.

Look, measuring intelligence is complex, but knowing basic math is, well, basic. Even with calculators in every pocket, not grasping simple numbers shows a massive hole in how we’re teaching our kids to think.

So the next time politicians promise they can control the sea levels in 50 years or regulate every business transaction into perfect equality, just remember this: they can’t even produce graduates who can add.
