The Stack: Do Washington Politicians Even Want America to Win
While America faces serious global threats, political dysfunction in Washington continues to dominate the headlines. On today’s Toddcast, Todd asks a blunt question: do some members of Congress even care whether the United States wins the war with Iran—or are they more focused on political optics ahead of the midterms?
Todd breaks down the fight over the SAVE Act, legislation designed to strengthen election integrity through citizenship verification and limits on universal mail-in ballots. Despite passing the House, the bill remains stalled in the Senate due to the modern “zombie filibuster,” which often prevents debate before it even begins.
At the same time, funding battles over the Department of Homeland Security are creating ripple effects—from border enforcement disputes to reports of massive airport security delays. Layered on top of that controversy is a lawsuit from current and former members of Congress seeking retroactive pay raises funded by taxpayers.
Todd closes the episode by drawing a powerful biblical parallel from the story of King Hezekiah—highlighting how leaders can become focused on short-term peace during their own lifetime rather than the long-term wellbeing of the nation.

📝 Transcript: Do Washington Politicians Even Want America to Win
The Todd Huff Show – March 10 , 2026
Host: Todd Huff
Todd Huff: My friends. Do some of these knuckleheads and clowns in Congress even want the United States of America to win this war with Iran? I find myself asking that question. Now, I don't mean to imply that I think that they want us to lose. I think that they simply don't care about anything other than the politics and the optics and how they can spin something to help themselves out politically. And if it doesn't cause utter disaster. In their tenure in Congress, during their lifetimes. I just. I don't know how many of these jokers and clowns even care in the slightest. In fact, it reminds me of a biblical story that I'll get to as we. Well, as the program unfolds here today.
Todd Huff: But leadership incentives. I don't want to say the incentives. Leadership. Leadership without. The character necessary to hold the role. Drifts towards things like obstruction, self protection. Short term advantage. Padding the pocketbook rather than securing the long term health of our nation. I think that's what we're seeing here. Today. And it's not a new thing, but it's just given the dire circumstances of where we are, given the realities of this world that we live in. It's more evident, maybe, than it was say, before 9 11, in the late 90s, when we had everything was going our way, when we had these same problems. But it just wasn't as obvious to the casual observer because. We weren't in circumstances where some of these tough decisions and difficult times were immediately before us. Anyway, I want to talk about that today. I appreciate you tuning in. Listening here to the Todd Cast, the Todd Huff Show. Whether you're on radio, listening on the podcast, it's a pleasure. To have you, my friends.
Todd Huff (Sponsor): Let's face it, living with discomfort is tough. And while prescription medications can help, they often come with a long list of side effects, not to mention the risk of dependency. That's why more people are exploring natural options. Like Kratom from Christopher's Organic Botanicals. This is a family run company. They do things the right way.
They work directly with Indonesian farmers. They lab test every batch of product that they deliver to the consumer. To make sure that it is clean. There's no synthetics, no chemicals, no surprises. It's just natural, Honest Kratom, that's been used for generations. Real Kratom, my friends, is pure. It is handled expertly. It's not some synthetic blend or contaminated junk. That you find other people pushing out there. As Kratom. In fact, that's where the problems come from. In fact. You've heard bad headlines inevitably. It comes from some shady sellers. Putting some contaminated garbage out there. As Kratom. Christopher's keeps it real. They keep it clean. They keep you informed. You can start with their creative starter pack. Use code Todd huff. Todd Huff: Okay? Let's get into this. My friends. I want to talk with you. About everything that. Well, I can't get to everything, But I want to talk about a plethora. Of issues today. That underscore what I mentioned at the beginning of this program, which is that it is fair to question. It's fair to question. The desires of people in Washington, D.C. when it comes even to winning the war in Iraq. Excuse me, Iran. That goes back. You can see old habits are hard to break. Going back to the war earlier in the 2000s, we're now in a war with the people.'s islam. Excuse me? The islamic republic of iran. And I'm not sure. That some people really care to win this war. Instead, they care to win. The midterm elections. Now I care to win the midterm elections as well. I want the Republicans to maintain control of the House, the Senate.
Todd Huff: And to continue to. Well, to continue doing the things that they've been doing correctly. Pick up the pace. In areas they've been lagging in and actually makes them much needed change in this country to get this nation back on track. Plenty of good things have happened. In fact, oftentimes, despite. The lack of support or enthusiasm. Or. Urgency in Congress. But there have been plenty of good things. There are other things that need to be done. President Trump is now on record as saying he's not going to sign any other bill into law until Congress passes the SAVE Act. Now, we've talked about this on this program. I will not go into all the details here, but I have to be mindful of people who may be tuning in for the first time. The SAVE act is a piece of legislation that is designed to make certain changes, certain requirements for our federal elections so as to prevent voter fraud.
Todd Huff: Those include. Proof of US Citizenship when you register to vote. This is not some sort of an extreme requirement. In fact, I've shared with you I had some difficulties getting my real id. I had to go back and actually get a new Social Security card I created to get the real id. I thought it was strange that I could get a Social Security card simply by giving them my driver's license, but I couldn't get a real id simple by giving them my driver's license because it didn't have the little star on it. Because it wasn't the real id. But I could use the Social Security card that I got. From? Well, from the Social Security Administration. Once I showed them my driver's license. It was just crazy little things like that, but that's how they listen. But I could use the Social Security card that I got. From? Well, from the Social Security Administration. Once I showed them my driver's license. It was just crazy little things like that, but that's how they listen. Different levels of government, different departments working together. That's what they required. I eventually figured it out. It's not some unnecessary burden on someone to prove that they are a citizen of this country in order to vote at the time of registration. The bill also would limit universal mail in voting. Basically saying that in order to have a mail in ballot, you either have to request one because you're going to be traveling or some other reason that prevents you from going to the polls to vote. Or you're in the military or something like that.
Todd Huff: Universal mail in ballots would be eliminated under this law, meaning that you wouldn't just have a state drop ballots in the mail stream and then assume that every ballot that came back was filled out by the person whose name the ballot was cast under, so to speak. This has passed the House of Representatives. It is stalled in the Senate. The reason it stalled in the Senate is because of something called the filibuster. This, by the way, I want to be clear. The filibuster rule is not something in the constitution. It's not something in the Declaration. It's not something that is part of our nation's founding ideas on that particular legislative body. No. A filibuster is a rule in the Senate that both parties have kept in the rules for a long time now that allows for the minority party to delay a vote, or in modern times, to actually stop a vote on a particular piece of legislation.
Todd Huff: Now, what's interesting is that the filibuster used to be something you had to physically do. You had to hold the Senate floor. You and the people that were on your side, you had a continued debate. There's movies about this sort of stuff, right? You had to continue talking about things. You've had stories of people reading through phone books and that sort of thing to continue talking. Because if the majority was there and ready to pounce once you stop talking, they could take the floor and cast a vote. That is not how it's done currently. And now what we have is what's called the zombie filibuster, which basically means if the party not in power has at least 41 votes, it takes 60 votes to invoke cloture, which is basically telling the filibustering folks to shut up. So if there's not 60 votes, there's 100 senators. So if there's 41 people who want to continue preventing something from being voted on, they can do what's called a zombie filibuster. They don't have to actually take the floor. They just say, look, we've got 41 votes or more, and we're going to filibuster this. And then the party with the majority power would say, okay, well, I guess we won't even discuss it. So there is no debate. And see, that's what's interesting here, the concept of the filibuster. At least listen. I know it's a tool that's being used and manipulated for the people who are in the political minority. I get that.
Todd Huff: But I also understand, as someone who thinks about the reasons and the underlying rationale for implementing such things, that the Senate was—or, excuse me, the filibuster was designed to create more debate, when in reality what it's done is create less debate. By threatening to filibuster legislation doesn't even reach the floor. And so there's no more discussion on the legislation. See, that's part to me. That's part to me of what people who are purist on the filibuster would want. You would want people to know the reasons that you oppose the piece of legislation. And so the more you could talk about it and expose its weaknesses, theoretically, the better off you would be. But that's not what's being done today.
Todd Huff: So there's no actual accountability here. It's just, well, we don't have the votes. What are we going to do about it? I guess we're going to move on to the next particular thing. And this creates the Senate. A Senate that seemingly requires 60 votes to get anything done, with the exception of things that the filibuster rule doesn't apply to, which would include judges and Supreme Court justices. And so we're stuck here. And Trump says, look, there's not going to be any additional legislative deals until the SAVE act moves forward. This is, of course, a tactic by the White House to force action on election security. Folks, we've got a midterm election here. What is this? This is March. So we've got an election in less than eight months. And so this needs to be done. There is nothing in the save act that is that puts an undue burden on people to cast their ballot. To prove you're a citizen to show photo ID at the polls. To not have mail in ballots unless you request one for a specific reason. These are all reasonable things, in fact. These are all ways that states have operated in some degree now. I mean, this is very close to how our state of Indiana currently or my state of Indiana currently operates.
Todd Huff: And so what is wrong with this? There's nothing unconstitutional about this. But they want chaos. In fact, in today's Todd Talk I gave an example today of something we were told that never could happen when it came to election integrity and having a legal aliens cast ballots. In today's podcast I talked about a gentleman who's alleged to have been ordered deported in 2000, but yet he remained in this country and voted in every presidential election since 2008. I thought that could not happen, my friends. But it does happen. At least it's alleged to have happened there. The question is, how often is this happening? And why wouldn't we create law that prevents it from happening? It's because people don't care if it politically helps them. So on top of that, we've got that going on. We've got a DHS funding issue. Department of Homeland Security that funding for that department is unresolved. Now you know that the Department of Homeland Security, you probably know this, is responsible for the TSA airport security. They're also in charge of border enforcement. And so that's why border enforcement, ICE, Customs and Border Patrol funding—that's why the Democrats are against it, because they're in favor of open borders, which again, why would you be in favor of open borders?
Todd Huff: And so that's why border enforcement, ICE, Customs and Border Patrol funding—that's why the Democrats are against it, because they're in favor of open borders, which again, why would you be in favor of open borders? You can point to particular cases. Think about this. You can point to particular tragic, sad cases where an American citizen is dead who would not be dead if we secured our border before Trump came into office. It is a sad reality. It is an absolutely sad reality you can point to, and I don't like to do it. Because I feel like it's unnecessary. Except for it is necessary to make the point. But you have grieving families who in some cases are hearing about these cases repeatedly, because the case is being made that this is the sort of thing that happens if you don't secure the border. But again, this was a voter. What do you want to call it? A voter registration campaign run by the Democrats. They don't care. They do not care about these things. And so they want to cut funding to the Department of Homeland Security because they don't want ICE to be used in our streets to remove people who are here illegally. By the way, the law of the land is that those folks shall be deported if they're here illegally and yet Congress, the Democrat Party specifically, the Senate Democrats now because, of course, the filibuster, want to deport individuals because it helps them politically.
Todd Huff: Now, let's talk a little bit about the TSA side of this. This is airport security. Travelers have now been told to arrive four hours early. So if you're flying anytime soon, expect long airport security lines. So expect delays in airports. There have been reports of some passengers having had it take three and a half hours to get through airport screening, airport security. So federal operations have been strained. This is an intentional outcome by the Democrat Party. This is what they want. They want chaos, they want confusion, they want tumult. And think about what this is. This is airport security. Listen, I'm not necessarily a fan of TSA, how they operate and so forth, but it is our current method, our means by which we secure airport traffic, airport passengers and so forth. And they're cutting funding. They're holding it hostage because of politics, because of the personal gains that come when they allow illegal aliens to come into this country. And there's a couple of different advantages they get from that. One is it is seen as a voter registration drive by opening up the borders. Number two. Number two, it creates pressure to change the culture of America without having to argue for the change of culture. Just bring people into the country who are not American, who do not understand, and who are not required to assimilate into the American culture as they once were. And this is what you get. They hate America as founded, and this is a tool by which they do that.
Todd Huff: It's also a way to overrun the system just to make it impossible for the federal government to function properly. And it's a perfect combination for the Democrat Party to get more voters and to push America in the direction that they want to push it, which is against how America was founded. They wanted to take us a different direction than from the founding principles of America. How better to do that than by bringing people in here who don't even know what those are, who aren't required to assimilate into the American culture. And so you've got that going on. Right. You've got funding that is designed to protect Americans. Problems though I may have with DHS, that's still a legitimate function of the government. They are playing games with that as well. Meantime, I don't know if you've seen this. There is a congressional pay lawsuit where current and former members of Congress are suing, effectively the American taxpayer. Claiming that Congress has improperly blocked the cost of living raises, the cost of living adjustments, the COLA C O L A cost of living adjustment raises, and the lawsuit seeks to retroactively increase their salary. Going back to, I want to say, maybe around 20 years or so. I read this this morning in preparation for the program. So they want retroactive salary increases. This could mean significant taxpayer funded payouts. Some individuals reportedly getting, if this wins, if they win the lawsuit, some of these folks reportedly getting pretty healthy chunks of change.
Todd Huff: So we've got legislative gridlock. We've got fighting over funding for fundamental parts of the American government. One of the things the government should be focused on doing first and foremost is protecting its citizens and its borders, and we are not able to do that right now. At least in part because the Democrats refuse to fund the Department of Homeland Security. They want your life to be disrupted. And they want you to blame Republicans because some people are still naive enough to convince that Republicans are to blame for this, even though it's clearly the results of the filibuster. And yet here we are yet again. And then, of course, coupled with that is the political ruling class pursuing back pay through the courts. I'll reference that. I'll read a little bit from the article to give you a little bit more information about that when we return, my friends, from the break, which we've got to take here in just a moment.

Todd Huff: Friends, I've got to take a quick timeout. Quick time out here. When we come back, I'll give you a little bit of information about this retroactive pay to Congress that there's a lawsuit about, and then we'll move into the other things that I want to get to here. But I got to take that break. You're listening here to Conservative, Not Bitter talk. I'm your host, Todd Huff. Back here in just a minute. I told you before the break I would reference this story or dig a little bit deeper. This is justthenews dot com. Headline here. Congressional lawmakers are suing to try to win retroactive pay raises and drawing scorn. The plaintiffs argue that annual votes since 1992 to block automatic cost of living adjustments for members of Congress violated the 27th Amendment to the US Constitution, the NTUF says so. Here's the article. Several current and former members of Congress are suing to secure retroactive pay raises, drawing scorn from at least one fiscal conservative in the institution. Corrupt Washington politicians, including Democrat James E. Clyburn, are suing for retroactive congressional pay raises that could cost taxpayers millions of dollars. Representative Ralph Norman, Republican of South Carolina, who is running for South Carolina governor, wrote on social media last week.
Todd Huff: With 38 trillion in debt, Congress doesn't deserve a raise. Enough is enough. The National Taxpayers Union Foundation wrote a piece elaborating on the details of the effort for retroactive pay hikes. Represented by former Virginia attorney general Ken Cuccinelli. Jim Clyburn, Democrat, South Carolina. Rick Crawford, Republican, Arkansas. Steny Hoyer, Democrat, Maryland. Former representatives Rodney Davis, Republican, Illinois. Tom Davis, Republican, Virginia. Ed Perlmutter, Democrat, Colorado. And former senator Mark Kirk, Republican, Illinois, are suing taxpayers for retroactive pay hikes that could add tens of millions and potentially far more to federal liabilities, according to the organization. I won't get into the weeds here, but the NTUF said the plaintiffs are arguing that annual votes since 1992 to block automatic cost of living adjustments for members of Congress violated the 27th Amendment to the US Constitution. The suit was filed in 2024. This article's got a link to the suit if you want to take a look at it.
Todd Huff: But there you have it. The larger problem here. The larger problem is that we've elected people in Washington, D.C. and by the way, you would have, if you paid attention there, you heard representatives from both parties, Republicans and Democrats, have joined that lawsuit. And the attorney is Ken Cuccinelli, who's a Republican as well. You might remember his name from 20 some years ago. I certainly do. So that's what's happening in Washington, D.C. And meanwhile, we're fighting a war. We're fighting a war in Iran that 53 Democrats in the House cannot even admit the obvious truth that Iran is a state sponsor of terrorism. They simply can't say that. Fifty three. Folks, 9 11 wasn't that long ago. 2001. Well, in fact, this year we'll be remembering the twenty fifth. It'll be the twenty fifth. I don't like to use the word anniversary, but the twenty fifth anniversary, for lack of a better term, of the 9 11 hijackers crashing planes into buildings. The terrorists. The Pentagon. Flight 93. The trade towers. All of that stuff.
Todd Huff: It's the beginning. You want to talk about the beginning of TSA and all that. Look to 9 11. All this stuff can be traced back to that. And now we've got an Islamic republic who is fixated on destroying the United States of America and Israel through their pursuit of nuclear weapons. We've gone through this. I don't want to go again. You can listen to other episodes for more elaborate explanations as to why. But let me say this. The idea that twenty five years after Muslim extremists, Islamofascists, crash planes into the trade towers, the Pentagon, we had Flight 93, all that stuff. Twenty five years ignorant as to the intentions of people who are saying the same sorts of things as is the case with the Shia Muslims leading the Islamic Republic of Iran. It's candidly unbelievable.
Todd Huff: I remember the days after, in the immediate days after 9 11. This country in my lifetime. I'm almost fifty. I'm forty eight. Got the body of a forty seven year old, but I'm forty eight. And the unity that we had in this country in the days following 9 11 is unmatched. It really is in my lifetime. People were friendlier to one another. They were nicer. Everyone was a patriot. They had flags in their yards or stickers of flags on their cars. They were nicer in the grocery store. Church attendance went up. It's like that was a smack in the face of America to where we realized maybe we've gotten too busy and we've overlooked the truly important things in life. Being decent people and all this sort of stuff. Respecting what we have here in this great nation. All those sorts of things. And I remember when Bush's approval rating was, I mean, just through the roof. And listen, I mean a lot of things. There's a lot of criticisms and all that. But it was very high. I think it was close to ninety percent. Maybe even it touched ninety. I don't remember. But that's what happened. It's like we all understood these things are greater than any domestic political issue.
Todd Huff: And politics, by the way, were divided back then. And by the way, it didn't take long for Democrats to start—and the media—to start chipping away at Bush's approval ratings, driving it down to the mid-30s. And then Wolf Blitzer on CNN was reporting that every five seconds, breathlessly, thinking that he had led to the end of a presidency. And Bush, of course, then you had Bush versus Kerry in 2004. Listen. It was a very—just a lot going on, a lot going on during that time. Ups, downs, America changing. But it's also the beginning of the polarization of America. We know in the past 20 years or so, the left has gone much further to the left, and that's contributed massively to the political divide and the tensions here in this nation. And they've gone so far left to where some of them, actually, I don't think care if America wins these wars. They want there to be hurt on the American people. They want gas prices to go up. They want you to pay more at the pump.
Todd Huff: They cheer these things. They want to blame Trump. Of course you can trace this back to what's happening in Iran. But what were we supposed to do? Allow them to get a nuclear weapon and hold the world hostage? And wipe Israel off the face of the planet? I mean, this sort of stuff cannot be allowed to happen. But people in Washington, D.C., many of them don't care. They simply don't, or at least want you to question whether they do. Because if they did, why would they not be taking very rational steps to do things that we all need to be—that we all know need to be done? For example, win this war in Iran. For example, fund border security. Fund airport security. Get DHS funded. Get the SAVE Act passed. Why would they be against these things? No rational human being would. And that sets me up for where I want to take us into the last segment, which is a story in the Old Testament of the Bible, which I think this parallels pretty dramatically. Pretty consistently, pretty closely. We'll talk about that, my friends, after the break here.

Todd Huff: All right. I've alluded to this a couple of times. I want to get into this. I don't have as much time as I want, but I'm going to do the best that I can. Now, for those of you who have studied the Bible or who are interested in the Bible, you know that there was a period of time in the Old Testament that God allowed Israel to have kings. It wasn't what God wanted. But God relented and said, fine, if you want to have a king, I'll give you kings. And so there was a series of kings, starting with Saul, then King David, then Solomon. And then there was a civil war in Israel, splitting Israel into the northern and southern kingdom. Each of those kingdoms began to have their own kings. And most of those kings were not praised in the Bible. Most of those kings were considered bad kings.
Todd Huff: Now there was one king—one of the only kings in the account of the kingdoms during the split northern and southern kingdoms of Israel—who was considered a good king. One of the better kings after King David. His name was King Hezekiah. He ruled Judah around 715–686 B.C. And if you read Second Kings, chapter 18, you'll find that he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord. That's pretty strong praise. He trusted in the Lord comparatively more than other kings of Judah. And there's reasons for that. I don't want to get too much into the details here just for the lack of time, but he removed idol worship. He destroyed the pagan altars. He reopened the temple. He restored worship during Passover.
Todd Huff: But there was also a national crisis. The Assyrian Empire had threatened Jerusalem. They surrounded the city. Hezekiah went to the temple. He prayed. He sought counsel from the prophet Isaiah. The Assyrian army withdrew after they had mounted some catastrophic losses at the hands of God. Jerusalem was spared. He also—King Hezekiah—had a personal crisis as well. He became very, very ill to the point where he thought he was going to die. In fact, in Second Kings, chapter 20, Isaiah tells him he's going to die. Hezekiah prays, and God decides to give Hezekiah fifteen more years of life. Now he receives a visit after this stuff all takes place. He receives a visit from the leaders of Babylon. And this is in Second Kings, chapter 20, if you want to read this. So this envoy arrives in Jerusalem after they had heard of his recovery from his near-death experience. And Hezekiah shows this envoy everything. The gold, the silver, the treasury, the weapons, the storehouses, and the palace. Basically just showed them everything.
Todd Huff: And Hezekiah shows this envoy everything. The gold, the silver, the treasury, the weapons, the storehouses, and the palace. Basically just showed them everything. And if you read another book of the Bible in Second Chronicles, chapter 32, you'll see why this was a problem. It says the Bible says Hezekiah's heart basically became proud. He was doing these things out of personal pride. His success had accumulated. He had this military victory. There was reforms in his country. Miraculous healing. He had extended his life. And instead of being humble, he kind of became a little arrogant about this.
Todd Huff: And then his arrogance led him to show Babylon the kingdom's wealth. And this is the opposite of what followers of Yahweh are supposed to do. We're not supposed to have this self confidence. Our confidence should be rooted in the God of this universe. We shouldn't be boasting of our accomplishments. We shouldn't just be trusting in our status and strength and all that sort of stuff. The dependence is on God. And God tested him. God tested him, and eventually Isaiah confronted him and said, look. Everything in this palace is going to one day be carried off to Babylon. And not only that, some of your descendants are going to be serving in Babylon. By the way, all this came to pass with the Babylonian exile. But here's the key point that I think sums up Hezekiah's mindset and what we see from political leaders today, and candidly people of all different walks today as well. Second Kings 20:19 says this. Hezekiah says, the word of the Lord that you have spoken is good, talking to Isaiah. Then it explains in the text his reasoning. Will there not be peace and security in my lifetime. He was only concerned about the immediate impact on himself, not future generations.
Todd Huff: My friends, this is what we have in Washington, D.C. today. I gotta go. SDG.
